I am a family law lawyer. I practice exclusively in this area, including divorce, custody and access, child support, spousal support, property division, marriage contracts, cohabitation agreements, separation agreements and legal opinion letters on a foreign divorce.
I graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 2004. Yes, at one point in my life I wanted to be a scientist. After being clumsy in the lab and feeling lonely with so little human interaction, I realized I wasn’t in the right profession. Instead, I decided to try my hand at law.
While in law school, I took multiple courses in family law. I really enjoyed it and realized that the area of divorce and family law is something I excel in and am passionate about. I graduated from Queen’s University Faculty of Law in 2008 with a Juris Doctor degree and was called to the bar in 2010.
As an articling student, I learned from the best: my mentor was a prominent family law lawyer with over 30 years of experience. At present, I have eight years of experience working full time in family law. I am a member of Peel Law Association. I’ve appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice.
As a sole practitioner, Nhu-y Nguyen provides a personal experience during a difficult and emotional time in your life. You get the comfort of knowing that your file will not be handed off to a junior lawyer, a law clerk or an articling law student. This means your file will be 100% managed by Nhu-y – no double billing by having multiple persons reviewing and working on your file, which is common practice in larger firms.
Her personal philosophy is to manage your case in the same way she would want her own case to be managed: professionally, efficiently and cost-effectively. Poor communication is a common complaint about lawyers – Nhu-y ensures that you are kept up-to-date every step of the way. She is cognizant of the legal cost to a client and will always give you options on how to limit cost. For example, she will encourage you to help your own case by being organized and fast with providing any documents requested by her.
Most people are intimidated by their own lawyer; Nhu-y will always remind you that you are the boss of your case – she will give you her professional advice but at the end of the day, you are in charge of your case. She finds out her client’s number one priority and suggests settlement options based on that.
For new clients only, Nhu-y will provide a discounted initial consultation rate for up to 1 hour for $100 including HST.
